The history of Ceylon Tea goes back to the early 1860s, during which the main crop produced in Ceylon then was coffee. Owing to devastation caused by the coffee-rust fungus, the majority of the coffee plants were killed, which made estate owners to lose interest in coffee and to diversify into the other crops in order to prevent an entire ruin. As the owners of Loolecondera Estate had been having a long-stood interest in tea cultivation since the late 1850s, started sowing of tea seeds in 1867under the supervision of James Taylor, a recently arrived Scot, who was appointed as the in-charge.
Since the inception by James Taylor, even more than 80 percent of the Sri Lankan tea estates were owned by British Companies until in 1971 the government of Sri Lanka introduced a Land reform Act, which passed state control of the majority of the plantation that left behind one-third of estate for private sector. A re-structuring Programme was introduced to get the involvement of the both local and international private sectors.
Having been incorporated in the year of 1993 Black Tea Exports Pvt Ltd has outshone all its competition and has become one of the top and leading exporters of pure Ceylon Tea from Sri Lanka.
